Sarah Balgord and Shelby Harris, both Wake Forest School of Medicine graduates, now have a unique perspective on medical care after participating in an emergency medical services elective course.
Wake Forest School of Medicine is the first medical school in North Carolina to offer such a course, which allows students to ride along with paramedics and first responders in Surry and Iredell counties.
The goal is to provide students with a wide array of real-life experiences to help them better understand health disparities, increase their empathy and help to improve the treatment and outcomes for patients.
