Joseph Hsu, MD, clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery, was awarded the COL. Brian Allgood Memorial Leadership Award from the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS). The award is presented annually for leadership excellence in military orthopaedic surgery.

This award recognizes Hsu's outstanding contributions to military medicine, orthopaedic trauma and leadership. Throughout his career, he has exemplified the core values of duty, honor, and country. His leadership was on full display in combat zones during Operation Iraqi Freedom as he earned a Bronze Star Medal for his exemplary contributions. His efforts have also led to groundbreaking research to improve combat-related injury outcomes. Hsu also founded a “Return to Run” program, which has redefined rehabilitation for combat-injured patients. Additionally, he oversees the osseointegration program at Atrium Health, advancing limb salvage efforts for trauma patients globally.

Hsu has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and has received countless accolades for teaching and mentorship. His remarkable career is a testament to his unwavering dedication to advancing military medicine and orthopaedics. His work has left a lasting mark on the field, while also inspiring the next generation of surgeons and medical leaders.
