Nadine Barrett, PhD, MS, MPH, professor of Social Sciences and Health Policy, was recently honored with the Trailblazer Award from the Tigerlily Foundation. This award recognized Barrett’s dedication to ensuring access to high quality health care and research.
Barrett was presented with her award at the annual EmPOWER Ball, which was recently held in Washington D.C.
Barrett is a dedicated champion and advocate for women of color who have breast cancer. Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite a lower risk of being diagnosed with the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Tigerlily Foundation is a national women’s health and oncology organization providing education, awareness, advocacy and hands-on support to young women aged 15-50 before, during and after cancer.
“The Tigerlily Foundation is a critical organization that centers on women of color experiences as they work through the diagnosis, treatment and survivorship of breast cancer,” Barrett said. “Organizations like this operate to ensure women of color have access to the right information, resources and support to navigate breast cancer and the complex systems of care.”
Congratulations Dr. Barrett on making an impact in the lives of those battling breast cancer.
