Angela Edwards, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, and Jeanna Blitz, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, were recently awarded the 2024 Education Advisory Board Education Innovation Award by the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA).
This award is in recognition of the design and implementation of two novel educational perioperative medicine programs: Perioperative Management Core Knowledge certificate program and the Perioperative Medicine Fellowship Program. These programs are the first-of-their-kind and have been highly sought after by applicants from multiple medical disciplines.
The certificate program is an asynchronous program that includes 20 educational sessions from 15 experts who provide current information regarding best practices in preoperative optimization and perioperative management. Upon completion of the video series, there is an examination to assess knowledge and provide continuing education for those with a passing score on a post-session test.
The fellowship program is one year virtual program with weekly group mentorship sessions focused upon a series of key topics in perioperative medicine and quality improvement. This program provides the next generation of leaders with clinical skillsets necessary to practice perioperative medicine, lead diverse perioperative teams, and design clinical quality initiatives. Professionals currently in clinical practice are eligible regardless of practice location and specialty.
The AUA promotes excellence in academic anesthesiology through mentorship; promotion of diversity and inclusivity; and professional growth throughout the careers of educators, academic leaders, and researchers.
