Why Train at Wake Forest University School of Medicine?
At the School of Medicine, resident education is at the heart of our academic patient care mission. We’re proud of our residency program and of the surgeons we train. Our educational program has fellowship-trained faculty in each of the orthopaedic subspecialty areas, and our educational experience ranges from management of routine fractures to complex tertiary orthopaedic surgery referrals.
You’ll receive instruction in all aspects of adult and pediatric orthopaedic surgery in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting. The sports medicine program coordinates the care of athletes at multiple levels, including the Winston-Salem Dash minor league baseball team as well as Division I teams at Wake Forest University and other local colleges and high schools. Our wide referral base and catchment area ensures exposure to a wide variety of musculoskeletal pathologies. As a Level 1 adult trauma center, the orthopaedic trauma education program.
With around 2,500 orthopaedic trauma cases being performed annually and the addition of a new acute care surgical tower, residents will graduate being comfortable with the management of common “on-call” fracture care, as well as the poly-traumatized patient.
Our free-standing cancer center provides trainees with the most state-of-the-art cancer treatment and therapy exposure.
As a member of the orthopaedic oncology team, residents will be exposed to a variety of pathologies as an integral member of the greater oncology team, providing critical care for this patient population.
Our total joints surgeons are nationally renowned, and our group is proud to say they are a total joint center of excellence. Residents are exposed to the most up to date techniques in both primary and revision arthroplasty of the knee and hip.
Wake Forest University School of Medicine has a long-standing and proud tradition in the upper extremity/hand specialty, being innovators in this field for the past several decades. Unique to our program is the combination of faculty providing care from the shoulder to the hand, allowing residents and trainees the opportunity to take hand call at a busy Level 1 trauma center, while being a part of an extremely busy and productive elective practice.
Our school of medicine has a mission to serve and assist our veterans and is proud to provide an orthopedic rotation within the VA system. Serving our veterans and assisting with their health care needs is both an educational and rewarding experience, with “general orthopedics” of arthroplasty, upper extremity, sports and trauma combined.
