PROJECT SEE: Screening Eyes and Education

Our Mission Statement

Project SEE is a student-led initiative that provides free adult and pediatric vision screenings and prescription glasses to un- and underinsured individuals in Winston-Salem. We work to address critical eye care access barriers in underserved communities while educating participants on the connection between eye health and overall wellbeing.

Our Impact

  • We have screened 400 patients over the past two years, providing essential comprehensive vision screening for local residents who struggle accessing vision services.
  • We have distributed 97 pairs of prescription glasses and 18 reading glasses at no cost to patients
  • Our intake data highlights the significant hurdles our patients face in accessing vision services, including:
    • 83.5% are uninsured
    • Over a third of households live on less than $15K per year
    • Nearly half of our patients have delayed seeking eye care, 77% citing cost as the primary factor
