Wake Forest Internal Medicine Interns Where Are The From?

As a resident of our internal medicine program, you will interact with many patients and learn from our experienced faculty, who encompass the spectrum of subspecialities.

One of the best ways to learn about a program is hearing from the residents who live and work in it every day.

"No matter where in the world you end up, it is the people who will have the biggest impact on your experience. My top criteria for residency were people and location. I asked myself "How did I feel during the interview? What does the landscape look like?" My partner will tell you that at no other interview social hour did I laugh as much as I did that night with Wake. With mountains pretty much in my backyard, and the ocean down the street, what better location can I ask for? It felt right, so, I chose Wake!" - Wakeem Abraham

"I was initially drawn to Wake for the sense of welcome and feeling of community I felt on my interview and second look day. From the program leadership, to my co-residents, to the staff at the hospital, I am still impressed by the support I feel from those around me. Not to mention, the program has strong academics, opportunities for research, and potential for personal growth. When I'm not at work, Winston-Salem offers something for everyone! I've sampled beer at most of the local breweries, taste-tested coffee from over 30 local coffee shops, and have taken advantage of the close proximity to the beach, the mountains, and other North Carolina cities!" - Morgan Lehman

"I was initially drawn to Wake because it was a large academic medical center with every specialty and fellowship imaginable. During the interview process, I met wonderful faculty members and residents who really showed the spirit of the Wake community. What I have found here since joining the program is an incredibly supportive community that pushes its residents to be their best. There are opportunities and mentors available for every possible specialty interest. The program leadership really listens to the residents and takes our input into account. There is a great balance between work and life with incredible clinical training and great and early graduated autonomy. It doesn't hurt that Winston-Salem is very affordable and has lots of activities to do on my off time--like hiking, shopping, dining, and exploring coffee shops. " - Sam Matott

"My Wake interview drew me in with the sense that, at this program I would be nurtured both as a physician and as an individual, which has proven to be true! There is a great sense of comradery between both residents and attendings. I am exploring careers as either an academic hospitalist or an oncologist and have been able to grow skills for both paths through my involvement in the Tinsley Harrison Research and medical education pathways. At Wake, I have found mentors in both fields that have been invaluable resources as I plan my medical career. Winston is an affordable place to live with cute restaurants/coffee shops, and the proximity to the outdoors makes it very easy to get fresh air when out of the hospital." - Sapna Kedia

"Wake Forest was my last interview during the residency application process, and after having completed an away rotation and comparing my interview experience with Wake to other programs, it was clear that Wake Forest was where I wanted to match. I wanted a large academic medical center with diverse patient cases and a residency program that supported my individual career plans while balancing autonomy with appropriate supervision.  I can honestly say that some of my closest friends are here, despite me being only in my second year of training. All of the attendings and program leadership are supportive and create safe environments for residents to learn medicine. As a local, I am able to say that Winston-Salem has a small town feel but with city-like opportunities: friendly and familiar people, no traffic, and tons of breweries, bars, and restaurants to spend time with friends. Wake has helped shape my career by creating environments in which mentorship naturally forms. I am interested in Infectious Disease, and I have been able to spend several days during my intern Y weeks and 2nd year elective blocks in our HIV clinic networking and establishing meaningful relationships with ID faculty who routinely provide me guidance and support in my future endeavors." - Caleb Ramey

"Wake was my first interview in the residency application process, and I found myself repeatedly comparing other programs to it. Even through the virtual interview, the camaraderie between residents and the supportiveness of faculty was obvious. Since starting residency, I’ve had nothing but support and wonderful mentoring to help me reach my career goals. Also, living in Winston-Salem is an added benefit to the program with lots of great restaurants, coffee shops, and outdoor activities!" - Kit Sommers

"I knew I wanted to train at Wake after meeting the welcoming residents and faculty. Beyond its excellent clinical training, what sets Wake apart is the culture - mentors who are accomplished yet approachable. I was especially drawn to the Medical Education Pathway, a structured program that helps residents develop as teachers, as I am interested in continuing medical education. Furthermore, I chose Wake because of the X + Y schedule - Y weeks offered early and diverse subspecialty exposure, which would help me realize which field or fellowship I wanted to pursue. Y weeks would also be excellent opportunities to network and find mentors who could guide me early in residency. Living in Winston-Salem is another bonus - your money goes a long way, making life outside the hospital enjoyable too!" - Larry Yang
