Welcome to vascular anesthesia! Most residents do their first vascular rotation late in their CA-1 year or as CA-2s. Many choose to do an advanced elective as CA-3s. In these rotations, you will learn to take care of some of the most challenging patients that you will encounter. Common procedures include asleep and awake carotid endarterectomies, carotid stents, open and endovascular AAAs, aortic and renal artery bypasses, lower extremity bypasses, and an assortment of other endovascular procedures.
Quizzes and study guides emphasize key points like perioperative cardiac testing, case specifics, and radiation safety. In the senior elective, you will practice mock orals involving common oral boards scenarios (e.g., carotid endaterectomies and AAAs). Residents frequently place, interpret, and discuss invasive monitors like arterial lines and continuous cardiac output pulmonary artery catheters.
