Cancer Biology is the field of study the uses interdisciplinary approaches to understand the basic, clinical, and translational aspects of cancer. The Cancer Biology concentration would therefore meet the needs and desires of students interested in Cancer Biology and also provide a base of peers with similar interests and goals. The Cancer Biology concentration could also provide a value-added component, and competitive advantage, for students who choose to pursue careers that are not in the traditional academic career path, a frequent choice for current MS and PhD students across the country.
Educational Objectives and Goals
Core course requirements for MS Students:
- Carcinogenesis, DNA Damage and Repair (2 credits)
- Molecular Pathogenesis of Cancer (2 credits)
- Topics in Cancer Biology (2 credits)
- Cancer Biology Seminar Series (1 credit/term)
- Research completed in the laboratory of Cancer Biology Program faculty (6 credits)
Core course requirements for PhD Students:
- Students must complete coursework with a B grade or higher, pass their written proposal, and become a PhD candidate.
- Carcinogenesis, DNA Damage and Repair (2 credits)
- Molecular Pathogenesis of Cancer (2 credits)
- Topics in Cancer Biology (2 credits)
- Cancer Biology Seminar Series (1 credit/term)
- Dissertation research completed in the laboratory of Cancer Biology Program faculty
GPA Standard: All students must achieve a B or higher in each course and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Certification of Completion for MS students: The Cancer Biology Program Director will certify completion of the requirements for the concentration.
Certification of Completion for PhD Students: The Chair of the student’s dissertation committee will certify completion of the requirements for the Concentration – requires signature of Program Director for final approval.
