Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Application Process

The Joycelyn Johnson GME Scholarship Clerkship Program is administered by the School of Medicine’s Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. This program is designed to promote diversity in the residency programs at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and annually offers scholarship assistance to visiting fourth-year medical students. Applicants must be fourth-year, U.S. medical school students in good standing at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) or the Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association. Applicants may be eligible to complete up to one four-week elective with rotation periods typically starting in June. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Interested students must submit a visiting student application through VSLO® in addition to the scholarship application. The scholarship application is a separate application and will only be reviewed after you have been accepted for a visiting clerkship. We award two scholarships annually designed to promote diversity and inclusion in our Plastic Surgery Residency Program. Our goal with this scholarship is to be able to assist Sub-I applicants to our program, an intense exposure to all aspects of plastic surgery. This scholarship will also focus on creating an educational environment that embodies diversity and inclusion and allow the students an opportunity to form a relationship with current house staff and faculty

Eligibility

• Students must currently be enrolled as a fourth-year student, in good standing, at a U.S. medical school and be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident to apply for this scholarship.
• Applicants for the funded clerkship must come from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine. Under-represented in Medicine (URM) refers to individuals from a background that is traditionally underrepresented in medicine, including but not limited to racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, identify as LGBTQ+, have disabilities, are first generation in the United States or first in their immediate family to attend college, or who otherwise would increase the diversity and inclusivity of our student and resident/fellow populations.

The Wake Forest SOM Plastic Surgery URM Scholarship has been created to assist with expenses for a 4-week Sub-Internship in our program. The Sub-Internship is built to be an all-inclusive experience with strong emphasis on plastic surgery education. Each applicant awarded one of these scholarships will receive a stipend of up to $1500 to cover housing, travel and meal expenses. The program will allow students to rotate with our faculty and residents.

• 300-word personal statement describing your interest in this scholarship.
• Updated CV (including submitted/accepted publications, presentations, awards, and extracurricular/voluntary work).
• We will use the LOR, step scores, and MS transcript that was submitted with your rotation application in VSLO.
• Also, please include in your email if you applied for the URM scholarship that was offered by our institution and if you were awarded that scholarship as combined scholarships awarded my not exceed actual expenses of for the Sub-I experience.

You will be notified by email if you are awarded one of our departmental scholarships and you will have to submit your receipts to be reimbursed for expenses up to the awarded amount. If you apply for both an institution and departmental scholarship and are awarded both you will submit for the institution scholarship first and then we will cover the rest of your expenses that you have receipts for.
