Student and Preceptor Support

Student Services Support was established in 1993 with funds from the NC General Assembly to strengthen support for primary care, community-based education.

Student Services was created at each of the nine regional AHECs to help facilitate the teaching of primary care students in ambulatory settings. The program's primary focus is on medical, nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwifery, pharm D and physician assistant students.

Student Services responsibilities include:

  • Assisting schools with preceptor recruitment and student placements.
  • Promoting and providing information resources to preceptors.
  • Arranging student housing for community-based rotations (AHEC housing is not limited to these students but Student Services staff often serve as the primary housing coordinators at the local AHECs).

Student Information

Finding housing in NW AHEC Region

Housing is available in the following cities: Boone, Elkin, Hickory, Mooresville, Morganton, Salisbury, Sparta, Wilkesboro and Winston Salem.

To request housing in one of these locations, you must request it through the NC AHEC website/online portal

The site will provide instructions on how to create an online account. You’ll choose “My Stuff,” then choose “Request Housing.” Then select the AHEC region(s) where you will need housing and enter the related information.

The online application process requires that you apply for your own housing. A school/course coordinator will not be able to apply on your behalf.

Please note: Northwest AHEC will only provide housing for requests that are eight weeks or less. After reviewing housing needs and reviewing housing that has been provided in the past, Northwest AHEC has determined that requests greater than eight weeks do not align with and fit the intent to provide short-term housing.

Once you submit your request, you will be contacted by email regarding availability.
