Health Careers and Workforce Diversity

North Carolina Health Talent Alliance – Northwest AHEC

The Northwest AHEC Talent Pipeline Management (TPM) initiative, in collaboration with the NC Health Talent Alliance, addresses critical health care talent shortages in North Carolina.

Through employer-led regional collaboratives, the program gathers real-time data to improve recruitment, training, and retention. By aligning workforce needs with educational outcomes, it ensures a steady flow of qualified health care professionals statewide.

Camp Med Summer Day Camps

One-week summer day camps are held throughout the Northwest AHEC 17-county region in various venues (schools, community colleges, hospitals, etc.) for students in grades 9-12. Northwest AHEC collaborates with local high school systems, universities, community colleges and hospitals/medical centers.

  • Each camp recruits its own students.
  • Each camp coordinator engages health professionals in their own community.

Students explore a variety of health professions, engage in hands on activities, listen to and interact with health professionals, as well as learn about and gain access to a variety of health professions’ resources.

The NC AHEC Scholars at Northwest AHEC

The NC AHEC Scholars Program at Northwest AHEC, recruits, trains, and supports a diverse group of students, creating a multidisciplinary team of health professionals committed to both community service and the transformation of health care in North Carolina. In our initial year of our Northwest AHEC Scholars Program, we have chosen to seek 20 individuals from our partnering institutions at Wake Forest University and Winston Salem State University. With an emphasis on underrepresented minorities, rural, and first-generation college students, the Northwest AHEC Scholars Program aims to improve the diversity and distribution of all health professions and support health systems transformation across the state. The program was expanded to now included Livingstone College, Salem College, Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University. From these institutions, the selected health science students will commit to improving health and health care, have an interest in improving their own skills, be devoted to community service and have an interest in working with other professionals in team based care.

Upon completion of the program, NC AHEC Scholars at Northwest AHEC will have received knowledge and certifications that will set them apart from other students in an increasingly competitive environment.
