Curriculum Overview

The Pediatric GI Fellowship is structured to progressively build clinical expertise and research acumen across three years. In the first year, fellows focus on core clinical skills through inpatient care and specialized rotations, while the second and third years emphasize scholarly projects, advanced training, and tailored electives aligned with individual career goals.

Fellowship Year One

The first year of fellowship is dedicated to building core clinical competencies. During this year, fellows primarily cover the inpatient service, providing care for patients on the GI service and offering consults to other services. One rotation is dedicated entirely to endoscopic proficiency.  Another rotation focuses on radiology and nutrition.  Additionally, first year fellows are given protected time to plan their scholarly project and meet with prospective research mentors.

All fellows participate one half-day per week in Fellows Continuity Clinic, where they are precepted by various faculty, but the fellow serves as the primary physician.

Fellowship Years 2 and 3

In the second and third years of fellowship, most of the time is protected for scholarly projects.  Fellows continue to participate in Fellows Continuity Clinic one half-day per week, and spend another half-day per week in the endoscopy suite.  During the second year, fellows spend one month in Charlotte at Levine Children’s Hospital for a hepatology rotation, which includes exposure to transplant hepatology. In the third year, elective time is available and can be spent on-site at Brenner Children’s Hospital, at Levine Children’s Hospital (for motility rotation), or at other institutions, depending on the fellow’s career goals.
