Emergencies and After-Hour Resources
For life-threatening emergencies: Call 911 and go to the nearest emergency room
- If you have an immediate concern about suicide, either personally or for someone else, call the Counseling Services Emergency Helpline at 336-716-0637 and press option 2 to speak with a crisis counselor immediately. Services and Appointments
Student Health Services is available to all actively enrolled students for the management of acute and primary care needs.
Services include:
| Acute Care (illness and injury): Evaluation and treatment of a range of acute care conditions including infections, illnesses, and injuries. Our staff will assist students whose condition requires referral to emergency services. | Telemedicine Visits: Evaluation and treatment of certain medical conditions may be provided via telemedicine visits. |
Clinical Care Coordination: Our RN Case Manager will assist students with coordinating their care within the School of Medicine resources and with off campus care providers. The RN Case Manager can also assist with navigating insurance concerns, leave of absence concerns and other factors that impact health and well-being. |
| Referral Support: At times, your medical needs may be best served outside of Student Health. Student Health offers a referral counselor who can assist with scheduling specialty appointments with local in-network providers. |
Mental Health Care: Primary care treatment of mood disorders (depression, anxiety, OCD and panic disorders), eating disorders and ADHD. The SHS will collaborate with Counseling and Well-Being Services, Wake Forest University Center for Learning, Access and Student Success (CLASS), Wake Forest University School of Medicine academic support services and off-campus resources to provide integrated care. |
Laboratory Services: Student Health Services can perform a limited number of rapid point-of-care laboratory tests on site. |
| Occupational Health: Students who experience an occupational exposure such as a blood-borne pathogen (BBP) exposure (needle sticks, exposure of non-intact skin or mucosal surface) or occupational injury should contact Employee Health. Any BBP exposure is an emergency and students should contact Employee Health immediately and follow these instructions for an exposure. |

Appointments
Student Health Services is following OSHA and CDC recommendations for safety in a healthcare setting related to COVID-19 to ensure that we can provide the best care in a safe environment.
We are accepting walk-in's and do not accept appointments unless it's a virtual visit. Anyone entering the Student Health Service will be required to wear a surgical mask. If you do not have one, one will be provided for you.

Patient Rights and Responsibilities
You have a right to:
- Be treated with consideration, respect and dignity.
- Have consideration shown to the spiritual and cultural beliefs that influence your perception of illness and care.
- Receive treatment without discrimination as to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, immigration status, disability, sexual identity, gender identity, relationship status, or age.
- Receive considerate and respectful care in a clean and safe environment.
- Privacy during medical care and confidentiality of communications and records pertaining to your care.
- Know who is responsible for coordinating your care.
- Request a change of providers within Wake Forest University School of Medicine Student Health Services to meet your needs.
- Receive complete and understandable information about your condition and care and participate in decisions regarding your care.
- Receive all the information you need to give informed consent for any proposed procedure or treatment, including the possible risks and benefits of the procedure or treatment and any alternatives.
- Refuse recommendations for treatment to the extent permitted by law.
- Approve or refuse the release of information from your medical record except when release is required or allowed by law.
- Expect that your protected health information (PHI) will be kept confidential as per North Carolina State, FERPA, and HIPAA regulations. PHI will be released to a third-party only with your written consent or if required by law.
- Obtain a copy of your medical records or review your medical records with a school of medicine Student Health Services designee.
- Receive an itemized bill and an explanation of all charges.
- Provide feedback about any aspect of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Student Health Services, without fear of reprisal.
You have a responsibility to:
- Provide accurate and complete information about your past medical history, allergies, medications, and current health status to allow for proper evaluation and treatment.
- Ask questions so that you understand your diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
- Notify Student Health Services in advance if special accommodation is requested for evaluation or treatment.
- Use prescription medications or medical devices only for yourself and not share with others.
- Actively participate with your provider in creating and fulfilling a treatment plan.
- Follow your health care provider’s instructions or discuss any obstacles you may have in complying with your prescribed treatment plan.
- Contact your health care provider if your condition worsens or does not follow the expected course.
- Be considerate and respectful of other patients, Student Health Services staff, and Student Health Services facilities.
- Accept outcomes if you refuse treatment or you choose not to follow a treatment plan.
- Keep all appointments or, if you are unable to do so, notify Student Health Services so that the timeslot can be used for another student.
- Provide a responsible adult, over the age of 18, to escort you home and remain with you for 24 hours, if indicated as part of a treatment plan.
- Ensure eligibility status prior to utilizing services.
- Promptly fulfill financial obligations and pay charges billed to you for services rendered.
