Student Health

Students and teammates have access to LiveWELL Care for quick and easy access to urgent care and primary care services with both in-person and virtual visits.

Students and teammates can access LiveWELL Care clinics across North Carolina, including convenient locations in downtown Winston-Salem and The Pearl in Charlotte. LiveWELL Care provides primary and urgent care services through in-person and virtual visits, with appointments available same day or next day. Visits are provided at no cost to all Wake Forest University School of Medicine students.

Eligibility

Wake Forest University School of Medicine students actively enrolled in degree-seeking programs (MD, PA, Academic Nursing, and Graduate School programs) are eligible for medical care at LiveWELL Care beginning the first day of classes through graduation, withdrawal, or removal from the School of Medicine.

LiveWELL Care is also available to all Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist teammates (regardless of Advocate Health medical plan enrollment) and to covered family members age 2 and older who are enrolled on an Advocate Health medical plan.

Billing and Fees

There are no fees associated with any services offered at LiveWELL Care for Wake Forest University School of Medicine students.

Sick visits for colds, flu, COVID-19, allergies, sinus infections, urinary tract infections and more
Injury care for minor cuts, burns, sprains, strains and more
Care for chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma

Emergencies and After-Hour Resources

For life-threatening emergencies: Call 911 and go to the nearest emergency room

If you have an immediate concern about suicide, either personally or for someone else, call the Counseling Services Emergency Helpline at 336-716-0637 and press option 2 to speak with a crisis counselor immediately. You may also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 or go to the nearest emergency room. For after-hours or emergency services, please contact the Counseling Services Emergency Helpline at 336-716-0637 and press Option 2 to speak to a live counselor.
If you have had an occupational blood or infectious body fluid exposure, complete an incident report and call 1-855-663-4327, selecting option 1, to report the injury. The service will transfer you to a Teammate Health nurse.

Patient Rights and Responsibilities

You have a right to:

Be treated with consideration, respect and dignity.
Have consideration shown to the spiritual and cultural beliefs that influence your perception of illness and care.
Receive treatment without discrimination as to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, immigration status, disability, sexual identity, gender identity, relationship status, or age.
Receive considerate and respectful care in a clean and safe environment.
Privacy during medical care and confidentiality of communications and records pertaining to your care.
Know who is responsible for coordinating your care.
Request a change of providers within Wake Forest University School of Medicine Student Health Services to meet your needs.
Receive complete and understandable information about your condition and care and participate in decisions regarding your care.
Receive all the information you need to give informed consent for any proposed procedure or treatment, including the possible risks and benefits of the procedure or treatment and any alternatives.
Refuse recommendations for treatment to the extent permitted by law.
Approve or refuse the release of information from your medical record except when release is required or allowed by law.
Expect that your protected health information (PHI) will be kept confidential as per North Carolina State, FERPA, and HIPAA regulations. PHI will be released to a third-party only with your written consent or if required by law.
Obtain a copy of your medical records or review your medical records with a school of medicine Student Health Services designee.
Receive an itemized bill and an explanation of all charges.
Provide feedback about any aspect of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Student Health Services, without fear of reprisal.

You have a responsibility to:

Provide accurate and complete information about your past medical history, allergies, medications, and current health status to allow for proper evaluation and treatment.
Ask questions so that you understand your diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
Notify Student Health Services in advance if special accommodation is requested for evaluation or treatment.
Use prescription medications or medical devices only for yourself and not share with others.
Actively participate with your provider in creating and fulfilling a treatment plan.
Follow your health care provider’s instructions or discuss any obstacles you may have in complying with your prescribed treatment plan.
Contact your health care provider if your condition worsens or does not follow the expected course.
Be considerate and respectful of other patients, Student Health Services staff, and Student Health Services facilities.
Accept outcomes if you refuse treatment or you choose not to follow a treatment plan.
Keep all appointments or, if you are unable to do so, notify Student Health Services so that the timeslot can be used for another student.
Provide a responsible adult, over the age of 18, to escort you home and remain with you for 24 hours, if indicated as part of a treatment plan.
Ensure eligibility status prior to utilizing services.
Promptly fulfill financial obligations and pay charges billed to you for services rendered.

Confidentiality

All medical care through Wake Forest University School of Medicine Student Health Services (SHS) is confidential. Medical information is only available to those directly involved in the student’s care. In the event of treatment with another medical provider, SHS will share relevant health information for continuity of care. Otherwise, SHS will not release any information about the student without their written permission, except as authorized or required by law, or in our judgment as necessary to protect the student or others from a serious threat to health or safety.

Medical records are maintained at Student Health Services are not accessible to students or the school of medicine faculty.

Student Health Services operates independently from other Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist/ Wake Forest University School of Medicine academic and clinical programs. Our providers do not hold any university positions that grade students or determine their academic promotion.

Privacy

The school of medicine student health services will comply with state and federal laws such as FERPA and HIPAA to protect the privacy of student treatment records.
