Our division prides itself on incorporating education at every opportunity. While teaching happens every day at the bedside, we have a number of fellow-oriented and fellow-driven conferences to supplement the clinical experience. Our goal is to incorporate adult learning techniques and multidisciplinary education whenever possible.

Fellow-Oriented Didactics

Orientation

First-year fellows receive one month of orientation that includes introductory didactics as well as delivery room, procedural and clinical “shadowing” experience. Core topics reviewed prior to or early in clinical service include:

  • Neonatal nutrition
  • Perinatal transition and resuscitation
  • Respiratory support and mechanical ventilation
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Shock
  • Surgical emergencies
  • Neonatal encephalopathy
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Physiology and Clinical Curriculum

Fellows attend a weekly conference for one-and-a-half hours of protected time. The proportion of conferences dedicated to each topic is determined by its emphasis on the boards and its complexity. Facilitators come from the Neonatal-Perinatal section, Pediatric subspecialties, and joint conferences with the Pediatric and Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowships. Emphasis is put on active learning with a minimum requirement of one-third of the didactic being case- or question-based.

Core Curriculum

A monthly conference, often in conjunction with other fellowships, covers core knowledge outside of physiology. Subjects include:

  • Statistics
  • Scholarly activity
  • Personal finance and wellness
  • Career development
  • Ethics and communication
  • Medical finance

Departmental and Section Conferences

Our Neonatal Section has both section-specific and multidisciplinary meetings, and many of these are both clinically-relevant and educational. Fellows pair with faculty mentors to lead journal club and M&M. They also present at the Research and Quality Improvement section-specific meeting as well as multidisciplinary Perinatal Conference.
