The Northwest AHEC (NW AHEC) and the Wake Forest School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) have had a long-standing collaborative partnership in offering certified continuing education to health professionals. This relationship was originally started in the early 1970s when Emery Miller, MD, was appointed the first director of NW AHEC and associate dean for CME. In 2003-2004, the partnership was enhanced by sharing staff, infrastructure and physical space.
There is a clear mission alignment between the NW AHEC and OCME. By uniting, they have developed a beneficial symbiotic relationship. NW AHEC elects to partner with OCME instead
of operating and maintaining a separate ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) accreditation status.
Likewise, OCME chooses to unite with NW AHEC since NW AHEC has a developed registration, financial tracking, administrative and evaluation infrastructures that are adaptable for OCME. Therefore, these two units of WFSOM leverage their inherent resources for maximum benefit in striving toward mission fulfillment.
