The Research Education Core (REC) at Wake Forest University School of Medicine promotes the development of future research leaders. It emphasizes development of skills for translating basic findings into clinical research, and clinical findings into basic research.
This core provides salary support and mentoring for early career faculty building an independent research career in clinical gerontology and geriatrics.
Supported scholars are chosen through a competitive application process.
The REC co-leaders are Denise Houston, PhD, and Heidi Klepin, MD, MS. Dr. Houston is a national leader in nutrition and aging research with expertise in both epidemiologic studies and clinical trials. Dr. Klepin is a clinician-scientist and leader in the field of geriatric oncology. They have collective experience in research training and mentoring.
