Grace Auton PA-C, MMS, MA, ('18) reports in on life as an early-career PA in a pandemic:

A person in green scrub pants, blue gown and hazmat hood stands with hands on hips outside a beige tent"I began my career as an emergency department PA at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center here in Winston-Salem. It has been such an honor and incredible learning experience working at a Level 1 trauma center where I see such a diverse patient population. In preparation for the pandemic, myself and my APP team were the primary providers that staffed the disaster relief tent located just outside of the ER where we saw all respiratory/potential infectious (essential COVID-19 rule out) cases anywhere from age 2 and up. Never did I think I would show up to work in a hazmat suit, having to enter/exit through a decon room daily, but I was excited to serve my community on the frontlines with such an outstanding team of PAs.

"We are all continuing to adjust to a new normal as we navigate telehealth visits built into our already busy/chaotic shifts, adapting to new schedules ... while also serving some of the sickest patients we have ever seen but I have never been prouder to work with the team that I do (many of them Wake PA alum) during such unprecedented times. ... Above all, the pandemic has shown me how truly versatile and adaptable the PA profession is and I am very proud to be a part of it."
