The Section of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine is internationally recognized for its research, education programs, and in the care and treatment of geriatric patients with age-related diseases. Our goal is to foster vitality, independence and resilience throughout the lifespan by promoting optimal physical and brain health. We will discover and disseminate knowledge to achieve this mission through multidisciplinary collaboration in basic and clinical research, research training, professional education and community outreach. With clinical partners, we will develop and apply new approaches for the treatment and prevention of physical and cognitive disability.

Our Research
The J. Paul Sticht Center on Healthy Aging and Alzheimer's Prevention is the umbrella under which a comprehensive array of clinical and research programs reside. These include the Section of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine of the Department of Internal Medicine, the National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, the NIA-funded Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, the Geriatric Research Center and the Roena Kulynych Center for Memory and Cognition Research, a Coordinating Center for including cognitive function and dementia outcome assessment in large clinical trials.
Aging research at Wake Forest is broad-based and well-supported and includes many federally funded investigator-initiated grants. There are also research training awards and extensive collaborative programs.
