Walter Scott Duy (top left), Pinyu Chen, Maira Haque and Shailey Shah (top right), all Wake Forest University School of Medicine students, have been named 2024-25 North Carolina Albert Schweitzer Fellows.
These students will spend the next year learning to effectively address the social factors that impact health, and developing lifelong leadership skills. Schweitzer Fellows develop and implement service projects that address the root causes of health disparities in under-resourced communities, while also fulfilling their academic responsibilities.
Duy and Chen are launching a vision clinic for uninsured/underinsured patients at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s Downtown Health Plaza. Brent Bond, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology, will serve as their academic mentor and Monica T. Brown, MPH, will serve as the site mentor.
Haque and Shah are launching a free foot clinic for people experiencing homelessness at Shelter Health Services. Suneet Kaur, MD, MHS, clinical associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, will serve as their academic mentor and Iris Hubbard will act as their site mentor.
