The training program includes experience in all phases of diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal radiology.
Clinical Rotations
Fellows are assigned to clinical rotations for a minimum of four days per week. The assignment includes:
- Interpretation of cases
- Supervision of residents
- Performance of procedures
Technology and Equipment Highlights
The Musculoskeletal Imaging fellowship program has access to:
- Nine fast reconstructing multi-detector computed tomography scanners
- Seven state-of-the-art ultrasound units
- Five MR imaging units
- Six remote control radiographic/fluoroscopic rooms
Research Opportunities
Fellows are encouraged to participate in the numerous ongoing advanced research programs led by the section. Opportunities available for research activities include:
- Case studies
- Descriptive studies
- Laboratory studies
Members of the Department of Radiology include a group of engineers and physicists who are actively engaged in:
- Development of magnetic resonance imaging
- Digital tomosynthesis
- Teleradiology
- Picture archiving and communication systems
In addition, we have resources available in the departments of anatomy, pathology and biostatistics.
Research and development funds are available from the department and from North Carolina Baptist Hospital for meritorious pilot research projects by the fellows.
Conferences and Didactics
Fellows and residents on the musculoskeletal service have the opportunity to attend Orthopaedic Grand Rounds and other relevant teaching conferences sponsored by other departments which include:
- Orthopaedic oncology service
- Trauma service
- Sports medicine service
- Rheumatology service
On Call Responsibilities
There is no in-house overnight call, but the fellows rotate with the staff on pager call for emergency procedures, as well as participate on department-wide daytime weekend coverage and evening MRI Center coverage. Optional elective time may be arranged according to individual need.
