I think our culture's really great. I think really the faculty is probably the best part just because they're pretty much the backbone. Being the backbone, they provide a lot of support for us.
Ricardo Trigueros, MD
So far in my short time here, I've really enjoyed working with everybody in general.
Julio Nasim, MD
People are really happy, attendings are really helpful. They try to help you to develop your professional career.
William Z. Webster, DO
There's a lot of extra support by the faculty, by the senior fellows in a way that makes you feel very welcome and soon you're part of the family and welcoming the newer fellows the next year.
Kelsie Johanna Pierre, MD
I love the fact that our program distributes our consult service time over the two years of training. I think that it leads to a more holistic view of your professional development throughout the training, and I think that it also helps us a lot with work/life balance.
Ricardo Trigueros, MD
While you're in service, you're always engaged in teaching, you're always working with students and residents. We all work as a team.
Joseph P. Creel, MD
We have the unique experience of interacting with every different service in the hospital, whether it be surgical services or medicine services or the oncology services. We have our fingers in every different part of the hospital which keeps things fresh and exciting every day.
Julio Nasim, MD
It's a great learning environment. There is a lot of research going on if you like those things. If you want to do clinical, there is attendings that are mostly clinical, and if you want to be an educator, there is opportunities for that as well.
Hanna Y. Akalu, MD
I'm interested in global health, and so there's quite a bit of mentors here who also have the similar interest, and so if you want to travel abroad and do some work abroad and do research abroad, that opportunity is presented to you.
Kelsie Johanna Pierre, MD
I also really like the fact that our program is strong in several different subspecialty ID areas. You get exposure to antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention, IPAC, transplant medicine, and I think that that really makes for an all-rounded ID professional.
William Z. Webster, DO
What I love most about this program is the degree of complexity seen in the patients that we are consulted on. There is a wide spectrum ranging from general infectious diseases, bone joint infections, all the way up to immunocompromised folks receiving bone marrow transplant, solid organ transplant in very unusual cases. Luckily, with a wide encatchment area and being a large level one trauma center and tertiary care center, we see all infections.
Julio Nasim, MD
The fellowship program is very unique compared with other fellowship programs in the sense that they hear to the fellows, there's a lot of feedback going on about the things that we feel and everything that needs to be changed, also that we have a very tight association with the lab. That's super important because you want to go to a place where they have the cutting edge technology, so if you want to speak about BioFire, gene expert like inaudible, we have all of those.
Chuka Enwezor, MD
You get time to spend with the patients too because you really need to take a detailed history so you get to know them on very multiple levels.
Kelsie Johanna Pierre, MD
I moved to Winston-Salem from Brooklyn and it was definitely a bit of a shock, but in a very pleasantly surprising way. Winston-Salem is a city that has a little bit of everything.
Ricardo Trigueros, MD
Before coming here, I've never heard about Winston-Salem. I've been exploring a little bit. There is a lot of restaurants, bars. There is also a lot of hiking areas. Really nice hiking areas to go around if you like hiking.
Julio Nasim, MD
Traveling is one of the things that I like the most, and the fact that we're very close to different airports is also a very convenient feature for me.
Adam Murphy, DO
I think it's big enough but not going to be overwhelming, you can get everywhere, you don't have to worry about traffic. You don't have to worry about those kind of things. It's easy to get to the hospital. You don't have to worry about getting to work.
Chuka Enwezor, MD
Especially when you have kids, you want to be in a place where you can take the kids to the park. In the true sense of the word, this is a very nice city, safe, lots of things to do.
Kelsie Johanna Pierre, MD
I think that I've really been able to explore different parts of me in this community.
Ricardo Trigueros, MD
Overall, I really like the working environment that Wake has to offer here.
Joseph P. Creel, MD
Where everybody enjoys showing up every day, enjoys interacting with each other and makes the work a lot easier and a lot more fun, especially when the days get hard.
