The Gastroenterology Fellowship is a three-year program for physicians who wish to become expert consultants in gastroenterology and hepatology. Through training that includes a balance of both the cognitive and procedural aspects of our subspecialty, fellows will be prepared to take on roles in academic and clinical gastroenterology.

Why Train at Wake Forest?

As a fellow, you'll be trained at a leading academic medical institution, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, which receives referrals from several states in the Southeast. You'll experience the full scope of pathology in gastroenterology and hepatology—from routine gastrointestinal (GI) issues to rare genetic diseases—while using some of the most advanced equipment available.

Our culture and infrastructure reflect a strong commitment to clinical education, and fellows are encouraged to explore and refine specific skills that align with their career goals.

"The greatest asset of the Wake Forest GI Fellowship Program is our people. We have intentionally recruited fellows and faculty for their collegial character, their passion for teaching and learning, and their commitment to excellence in patient care and research. Our faculty brings expertise across the spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology. Our fellows bring sharp minds, caring hearts, and an energetic commitment to each other, our patients, and the educational enterprise."

Program Goals

Our program aims to provide:

  • An outstanding patient care environment in which each fellow seeks to master basic and clinical knowledge of gastroenterology, state-of-the-art management approaches for patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases and the procedural skills of an excellent gastroenterologist
  • An outstanding educational environment with a full spectrum of lively conferences and relevant personal education in our gastroenterology clinics and in our endoscopic settings
  • An outstanding research environment where new ideas, new protocols and scientific writing are supported and encouraged

Our educational mission is fully supported by our section chief, Dr. Girish Mishra, who is a former program director himself. He understands the unique needs of a fellowship training program.

Girish Mishra, MD, Section Chief of Gastroenterology

Dr. Mishra shares the highlights of training at Wake Forest and his vision for the section.
