The curriculum of the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship includes a broad range of experiences, including clinical rotations, research opportunities and conferences.
Clinical Rotations
Fellows receive:
- Six months of adult clinical cardiothoracic operating room experience in both supervisory and primary provider roles
- Two months of dedicated transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) training
- One month in the Cardiothoracic ICU
- One month of thoracic anesthesia
- One month of out-of-OR cardiac anesthesia, including EP and cardiac catheterization lab
- Two months elective time which may be selected from TEE, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine or a focused mentored research experience
Conferences and Didactics
The Anesthesiology Department conducts weekly conferences during the academic year and offers mock oral examinations for fellows and residents twice annually. CT anesthesiology faculty-led, fellow-focused conferences occur Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

- Anesthesiology Department and Cardiothoracic Surgery Department Grand Rounds
- Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology subspecialty conference
- Weekly dedicated TEE lecture series for fellows
- Weekly adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia topics lectures for fellows
- Monthly journal clubs
Both the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology subspecialty conference and fellow tutorials are faculty-led and comprise didactic lectures, journal club, research presentations and case conferences.
Research Opportunities
Fellows are expected to contribute to ongoing research programs, and dedicated research time will be available throughout the fellowship.
Our group actively pursues both clinical and laboratory-based research initiatives. Specific interest areas include:
- Cerebral protection during CPB
- Myocardial function and ischemia
- Cardiovascular pharmacology
- Perioperative hemostasis and coagulation monitoring
- Aging and diastolic ventricular function
