Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Application Process

The Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program at Wake Forest School of Medicine is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship program. We offer two fellowship positions through the Critical Care Anesthesiology Match. We accept physicians who have completed ACGME-accredited residencies in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, OBGYN, or general surgery as well as general surgery residents who have completed at least their PGY3 year. The fellowship is 12 months (anesthesiology and surgery applicants) or 24 months (EM applicants) in duration, depending upon prior training.

Application Process

Residents interested in pursuing the fellowship program are required to apply through the San Francisco (SF) Match with the documents listed below. Selected candidates will be notified by email of available dates to schedule an interview.

Submitting an Application

Complete your application through the SF Match Central Application Service (CAS). This includes the personal information form, required supplemental form, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. 

Required Documents

As part of the ERAS process, prospective fellows will need to submit the following documentation:

  • SF Match Personal Information Form
  • Required Supplemental Form
  • Personal Statement explaining career choice and goals
  • Curriculum Vitae 
  • Three letters of recommendation to be addressed to the program director
    • One letter must be from a training Program Director or Chair. We encourage Core Anesthesia Program Leadership to use the Letter of Evaluation developed by the Association of Anesthesiology Subspecialty Program Directors. This can be found here and shared with your leadership.
    • The others must be from other physicians (with preferably at least one from an intensivist) with objective, personal knowledge of your skills and ethics
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step I, II and III scores or COMLEX scores
  • Exchange Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification (if applicable)
  • Current photograph

Eligibility Requirements

  • Eligibility for North Carolina medical license
  • Board Certification or Eligibility from the primary specialty board (ABA, ABEM, ABOG, or ABS) except for current surgical residents, as above
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Interview Process

A committee of core faculty reviews all applications and selects a limited number of individuals to invite for interviews. Invitations to interview will be sent by email from our fellowship coordinator on a rolling basis. Timely submission of a complete application in SF Match is strongly encouraged. Invitations for interviews will be sent by email from our fellowship coordinator Upon completion of interviews, the program fully participates in the Critical Care Fellowship Match as administered by SF Match.

Dual Anesthesiology Fellowship Applicants 

We welcome applications from candidates interested in pursuing dual fellowship training in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, or other anesthesiology fellowships at our institution.

In coordination with the secondary fellowship, we will help to complete the Match Exemption Agreement. Please note that registration for the SF Match is still required for candidates applying for an exemption and this process must strictly adhere to the timeline and guidelines established by the SOCCA Program Directors Advisory Council (PDAC).

Foreign Medical Graduates

We accept foreign medical graduates into our program. We look for well-qualified candidates and prefer applicants who have had U.S. clinical experience within the application year. If you need work authorization, our institution accepts J-1 Visas, Employment Authorization Documentation (EAD) and green cards.
