The Best SELF (Supportive Enrichment and Learning for Families) program provides a comprehensive support and enrichment structure with a focus on academic achievement.
The overarching goals are to:
- Increase high school graduation rates
- Enhance college preparedness
- Elevate student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields
Through a collaboration that includes CERTL, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist’s Family Medicine, BestHealth for Us and Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity, students are provided with a variety of opportunities. These include weekly academic tutoring with medical or graduate students, academic counseling on a quarterly basis, experiential field trips to Wake Forest University School of Medicine to learn about STEM-related career paths and a summer enrichment camp that addresses core academic subjects combined with healthy activities to promote wellness, nutrition and fitness.
Participating teammates are encouraged to take part in BestHealth for Us wellness initiatives. They also meet quarterly with program staff for updates on their child’s progress in the program and to develop and implement personalized enrichment plans.
