Researchers at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist are looking for high school students to volunteer for a research study about the impact of vaping.

What is this study about?
In 2020, over 3 million teens reported vaping. This study is being done to begin to understand the ways in which vaping impacts the development of teens’ brain, heart and lungs, and how that might change their ability to think and feel.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for high school students who have vaped, as well as those who have not vaped.

What is required?
The study involves two visits at Wake Forest Baptist (Winston-Salem) over 1-2 months. Visit 1 includes questionnaires, collection of biological samples (breath, nasal swabs, urine, blood draw), heart rate measures, and cognitive tasks. This visit will take approximately 2 hours. Visit 2, which is optional for those who qualify, involves more questionnaires and a brain scan. The brain scan does not involve radiation and is non-invasive. This visit will take up to 2 hours. Participants will be compensated up to $200 for completing both visits.

If I complete Visit 1, do I have to do Visit 2?
No, Visit 2 is optional for those who qualify. You can decide to participate just in Visit 1, if you would like.

How do I sign up?
To begin the process of determining if you are eligible, you will complete a brief online screen. To access the screen, click on the START HERE button on the right side of the screen.

Do I need a parent or guardian’s permission?
Yes, if you are eligible based on the screener, we will contact your parent or guardian to describe the study, ask for permission for you to participate, and confirm eligibility. We will not share any information with your parent or guardian about the answers you provided to the online screen. If you are eligible and your parent agrees to let you participate, you will still have the opportunity to decide if you want to be in the study. Before your Visit 1 begins, we will provide detailed information about the study to help you make your decision. You can also ask questions of the study team prior to enrolling in the study.

Can I have a parent or guardian come with me to the study visits?
Absolutely! All participants and parents/guardians will need to wear a mask for the entire study visit. Parents/guardians will be able to wait in a waiting room.
