Professor Emeritus, Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation
Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Pollock is a retired orthopaedic surgeon who was destined to be a Demon Deacon. Born in 1961 at the N.C. Baptist Hospital to Frank E. Pollock Sr., MD, House Staff ’59, and True Pollock, he grew up in Winston-Salem eventually receiving a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Wake Forest University in 1984. Pollock followed in the footsteps of his late father and older brother, F. Edward “Eddie” Pollock Jr., MD ’83, and completed his Doctor of Medicine at what was then Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1992. He continued his training with an internship in general surgery, a research fellowship in the orthopaedic surgery lab and an orthopaedic surgery residency at Wake Forest Baptist Health, now Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, finishing in 1999. Additionally, he completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute in Alexandria, Va., in 2000.
Returning to Winston-Salem, Pollock joined the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. In 2005, he left Wake Forest to join his brother in private practice in Winston-Salem and later returned to the orthopaedic faculty at Wake Forest in 2016 as professor and section chief of adult reconstruction to lead the development of the Total Joint Replacement Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Davie Medical Center. He retired from orthopaedic surgery in March of 2025 and currently works as a consultant in medical device engineering. He credits the Lord for making him the instrument he was as a surgeon and is thankful for the privilege of caring for his patients.
During his career, Pollock contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, 17 poster presentations, over 120 national and international presentations, four FDA trials, 10 international live surgeries and several book chapters. In addition, he was a consultant and designing surgeon for DePuy Synthes, a Johnson & Johnson company, where he helped in the development of instruments and patents for multiple knee replacement systems. He traveled extensively teaching new techniques in knee replacement surgery throughout Europe and Asia.
Growing up, Pollock developed a love for big challenges and the outdoors. He climbed multiple mountains including Denali (Mount McKinley) in Alaska, Mount Rainier in Washington and Aconcagua in Argentina. Additionally, he rode his bike first across North Carolina; then, he rode across the nation from Kitty Hawk, N.C., to the Golden Gate Bridge. Exploring himself in the natural world helped Pollock to develop the resilience he needed for his career in medicine.
In medical school, he met his future wife and best friend Deborah Hinch Pollock, MD ’94, and married in 1995 during residency. They live in Lewisville, N.C., and have three adult children. The Pollocks frequently spend time traveling and at their family cabin in Montana to enjoy riding mountain bikes, fly fishing, hiking and snow skiing. However, his primary love is for the Lord and their children. They are his legacy.
