Held at the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education, this complimentary CME opportunity was offered to all MD Alumni. The program highlighted the innovative work and research taking place at the Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention, as well as the Memory Counselling Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This celebratory dinner honored the MD Class of 1972 with their induction into the Bowman Gray Society. Induction into the society is a momentous occasion commemorating 50 years as physicians. 

The MAA recognized four individuals for their outstanding accomplishments. John R. Nelson III, MD ’85, MHM, received the Distinguished Achievement Award. Edward G. Shaw, MD, MA received the Distinguished Faculty Award. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Richard A. Brenner, and Karl J. Wold, MD ’22, was recognized with the Student Excellence Award. Scholarship donors met their student scholarship recipients during this annual event celebrating the generosity of alumni and others who have endowed educational support in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Alumni took a self-guided tour of the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education building. The tour included the experiential and teleconferencing learning spaces that guide the curriculum, learned about student “houses” and viewed our history in the Deacon Gallery. The tours concluded in the simulation labs, with highlights in the ultrasound and trauma simulations found in emergency and operating rooms. This tour provided alumni with an insight into the immersive learning environment our current medical students receive.

Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, FACS, FRCSEd(Hon), DFSVS, Dean, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Chief Academic Officer, Atrium Health Enterprise, Chief Executive Officer, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, led an informative conversation on our strategic partnership with Atrium Health and the positive impact it is having on our students and communities. Dr. Freischlag was joined by Terry Hales Jr, MBA, Executive Vice Chief Academic Officer, Senior Vice President, Academic Administration and Operations; Angela Sharkey, MD, FAAP, Senior Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education, Professor of Pediatrics; and Kristie Foley, PhD, Interim Senior Associate Dean of Research, Chair, Implementation Science, Professor, Implementation Science and Social Sciences and Health Policy. Panelists discussed Innovation Quarter (IQ) in downtown Winston-Salem and how it is the prototype of innovation district development around the world. Charlotte will emulate IQ, with a new innovation district, The Pearl, which will house the second location for Wake Forest University School of Medicine, life-sciences research and development as well as new businesses and urban housing.

Dr. Freischlag unveiled the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo and answered thoughtful questions from attending alumni and guests.

Alumni classmates and their guests enjoyed a casual lunch, catching up with each other and listened to music on the patio at the Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education. 

Trolley Around Town Tour

Attendees were treated to a complimentary trolley tour, which included site seeing visits through Innovation Quarter, UNC School of the Arts, Old Salem, downtown Winston-Salem, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Reynolda House and the campus of Wake Forest University. 

Reynolda House Museum of American Art Tour (no photos)

Reynolda House welcomed alumni and their guests to tour of the museum’s permanent collection of American Art, over 6,000 historic objects and the beautiful landscape known as Reynolda Gardens. Guests toured the featured exhibition, Black is Beautiful: The Photography of Kwame Brathwaite. This exhibition – the first dedicated to Brathwaite’s remarkable career – tells the story of a central figure of the second-wave Harlem Renaissance.
