Alisha DeTroye, MMS, PA-C, presented the poster “Empowering PA Students to Participate in the Opioid Epidemic Discussion” at the NC Academy of PAs Winter Conference in Durham in February. Sobia Hussaini, MHA, was a co-presenter. DeTroye and Hussaini also shared this work at Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Health Professions Education Institute Spring Mini-Symposium on April 22. 

Sarah Garvick - PA ProgramSarah Garvick, MS, MPAS, PA-C, presented “Student-Led Service Learning Event on Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes Enhances Educational Experience and Increases Outcomes on Pediatric Cardiac Exam Scores” at the Southern Group on Educational Affairs Regional Conference in Orlando, FL, in March.

Garvick and colleague Brian Robinson, MS, MPAS, PA-C, presented the poster “Early Introduction of Interprofessional Competencies to Pre-Health Professions Students Shows Positive Outcomes” at Virginia Commonwealth University Emswiller Interprofessional Symposium in Richmond in February; and the poster “Development of a Physician Assistant Regional Chapter in North Carolina” at the NC Academy of PAs Winter Conference in Durham in February.

Chris Gillette - PA ProgramChris Gillette, PhD, authored “A Call for Community Pharmacists to Complete Mental Health First Aid Training” in Journal of the American Pharmacists Association [2019;59(2):167]. Gillette’s poster “Community Pharmacist Attitudes towards Suicide and Barriers in Performing Suicidal Ideation Assessments” was a semifinalist for a Merit Award from the American Pharmacists Association at its March 2019 meeting. At the meeting, Gillette also presented the poster “Student Pharmacist Attitudes Towards and Perceptions of the Role of the Pharmacist in Suicidal Ideation Assessment.” 

Erich Grant, MMS, PA-C, presented “Improving Competence and Confidence among Providers who Participate or Train Learners to Participate in Medical Family Conferences” at the Conference on Medicine and Religion at Duke University in Durham, NC, in March.

Jill Grant, MS, MMS, PA-C, and Tanya Gregory, PhD, presented the poster “Resilience through Parallel Charts in Physician Assistant Education” at the Southern Group on Educational Affairs Regional Conference in Orlando, FL, in March.

Sobia Hussaini - PA ProgramSobia Hussaini, MHA, presented two posters at Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Health Professions Education Institute Spring Mini-Symposium on April 22: “Is healthcare a business? The Wake Forest Emerging Leaders Program Combines a Business Degree with a PA Degree” and “Launching into Healthcare: A Social Justice Framework for College-and-Career Readiness.” She also presented “Diversity & Inclusion at All Levels: Overcoming Silos to Strategically Develop Pipeline Programming for the Health Care Workforce” at the Southern and Central Regional GSA/OSR meeting in Louisville, KY, in April. Additionally, Hussaini authored “Specialty Certification and Clinical Flexibility” in JAAPA [2019;32(3):43-48].

K. Patrick Ober, MD, published “Paint by Numbers” in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society [2019;67:7-8].

Caroline Sisson - PA ProgramCaroline Sisson, MMS, PA-C, presented a workshop entitled “Nurturing Family Conference Competence and Confidence: When Physical and Emotional Suffering are Complicated by Spiritual Dissonance” at the Conference on Medicine and Religion in Durham, NC, in March. Erich Grant, MMS, PA-C, was a co-presenter.

Sisson also presented, with colleague Josh Waynick, MMS, PA-C, the poster “Standardizing Clinical Reasoning Assessment in Preclinical PA Education” at Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Health Professions Education Institute Spring Mini-Symposium on April 22.

Ian Smith, MMS, PA-C, was elected director at large for the Piedmont Association of PAs. Smith also participated in a roundtable discussion (with Sarah Garvick, MS, MPAS, PA-C, and Wake Forest PA Class of 2020 student Geoff Jones) entitled “Faculty Advisement during Initial Creation of a Student Interest Group” at Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Health Professions Education Institute Spring Mini-Symposium on April 22.
