CancerQTI Team

Dr. Sutfin is a tenured Professor of Social Sciences and Health Policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Director of the Qualitative and Patient-Reported Outcomes Shared Resource and PI of CancerQTI. Dr. Sutfin received her doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Virginia and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Adolescent Health at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her program of research is focused on reducing morbidity and mortality related to tobacco product use and has been continuously funded by NIH since 2008. Dr. Sutfin has extensive experience using qualitative research methods, including studies utilizing focus groups, interviews, usability testing, cognitive interviewing, and mixed method studies.

Dr. Nwaozuru is a tenured Associate Professor in Implementation Science, an Affiliate Faculty at the Center for Global Health at Wake Forest University School of Medicine with a specific interest in the areas of qualitative research methodology, implementation science, and community engaged research. Her research focuses on the use of participatory and community-engaged approaches to optimize health for all and to promote the adoption, dissemination, and sustainability of evidence-based interventions. Dr. Nwaozuru also serves as the Assistant Director of the Q-PRO Shared Resource.

Dr. Richmond is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Richmond’s research focuses on improving health and use of health services for all populations, with a specific focus on cancer screening and early detection. Additionally, Dr. Richmond’s research applies qualitative and mixed methods methodologies to explore patient experiences and perceptions. Dr. Richmond has significant training and experience conducting qualitative and mixed-methods studies.

Dr. Sohl is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Sohl’s research focuses on cancer survivorship, integrative medicine, and implementation science. She utilizes qualitative methods within this research to aid in developing and planning for the implementation of behavioral interventions.

Dr. Chandler is a Senior Research Associate in the Q-PRO Shared Resource of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr Chandler completed her doctorate in organizational science. Her research utilizes qualitative methodologies to examine participant experiences in both patient and provider roles within healthcare settings. She is a qualitative methodological expert and supports investigators at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in conducting qualitative research. Dr. Chandler has extensive experience designing, implementing, and directing qualitative research training initiatives.

Dr. Reilly is a Senior Research Associate in the Q-PRO Shared Resource of Wake Forest University School of Medicine Dr. Reilly completed her doctorate in public health. Her research applies qualitative methodologies to various health outcomes fields, including patient and caregiving experiences, healthcare disparities, cancer prevention and screening, and health behaviors. Dr. Reilly is a qualitative methodological expert with significant experience developing and leading qualitative research training programs.

Dr. Strahley is a Senior Research Associate is a Senior Research Associate in the Q-PRO Shared Resource of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her expertise lies in applying qualitative methodologies to research topics across the cancer continuum, including cancer prevention, cancer care and treatment, and cancer survivorship. She coordinated the development of Q-PRO’s qualitative research training curriculum and has delivered the curriculum in multiple settings, training and mentoring researchers.

Dr. Gabbard is a tenured Associate Professor of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Medicine and the Director of the Serious Illness and Palliative Medicine Research Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on improving care delivery for older adults with serious illnesses, particularly those with underlying cancer, cognitive impairment and frailty, and she has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on several NIH- and foundation-funded studies. For CancerQTI, Dr. Gabbard will serve as a guest lecturer on conducting qualitative research with patients and family caregivers facing serious illness.

Dr. Price is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Price is a clinical health psychologist and her research focuses on identifying and intervening on psychosocial and behavioral risk factors to improve health outcomes among cancer survivors. As part of this work, she has led and collaborated on projects conceptualizing and developing interventions to address stigma among individuals with lung cancer, publishing several peer-reviewed studies on the topic of cancer and smoking-related stigma and the influence of stigma on patient-provider communication and survivor well-being. For CancerQTI, Dr. Price will serve as a guest lecturer to train program participants on cancer stigma and how it can be addressed when conducting qualitative research with cancer patients.

Dr. Weaver is a tenured Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Health Policy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Associate Director of Population Sciences at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Weaver’s methodological areas of expertise include survey research methods, mixed methods, multi-level interventions, and dissemination and implementation research. Dr. Weaver is MPI and Cancer Care Delivery Research Lead of the Wake Forest NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Research Base (UM1 CA189824). In this capacity, she co-directs the coordinating center and serves as the PI/co-I for multiple cancer symptom science and care delivery studies operating within the NCORP network of over 900 community oncology practices. For CancerQTI, Dr. Weaver will serve as a guest lecturer detailing the application of qualitative research methods to multilevel interventions to improve cancer care.
