The Department of Anesthesiology and Imprints Cares recently hosted “A Day in the Life of an Anesthesiologist and Health Care Professional” at Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education. This immersive learning program exposed approximately 50 kindergarten through sixth-grade students to the varied aspects and fields of medicine.
Students rotated through eight stations that provided interactive, age-appropriate components designed to familiarize them with the medical environment, in particular the perioperative environment and anesthesiology. Examples of activities included sculpting anatomy with playdough, measuring vital signs, basic life support skills, ultrasound and airway/intubation on manikins.
Volunteers included Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Child Life specialists, nurses, pre-medical students, Wake Forest University School of Medicine medical students and critical care and anesthesiology faculty.
The younger children received a teddy bear stuffed animal that is integrated into the activities of each station and the older kids received a medical-themed bingo card to win prizes.
Imprints Cares is a proud leader of educational and health equity. As the only education nonprofit in Forsyth County serving families and children from prenatal stages into middle school, they are committed to addressing structural barriers that prevent children and their families from reaching their full potential.
