About Me
My expertise is on the cellular transplantation of living cells and my lab has developed procedures and devices to realize the clinical potential of hydrogel encapsulated living cells, as well as prescription and non-prescription drugs. Areas of investigation include biomaterials for cell microencapsulation, massively parallel concepts in cell microencapsulation, rapid tests of islet cell function, and use of modified alginate hydrogels as protective materials. For many years, my primary research interest was in Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity and the Metabolic Syndrome which remains an area of tremendous interest to me, especially the nutritional and pharmacologic strategies to prevent and treat these conditions.
