The Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship program at Wake Forest School of Medicine provides comprehensive knowledge in the diagnosis, management and surgical treatment of the thoracic and cardiovascular system.
The program consists of two clinical years, following the completion of five years in an accredited general surgery residency, resulting in board eligibility.
At the completion of training, fellows are competent and prepared to treat conditions including:
- General thoracic diseases
- Congenital heart diseases
- Acquired cardiovascular diseases
Program Goals and Objectives
The goals for fellows of the Cardiothroacic fellowship program include:
- Development of thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the thorax and cardiovascular system
- Development of clinical expertise in the diagnosis and management (operative and non-operative) of congenital heart, general thoracic and acquired cardiovascular diseases
- Attainment of technical and surgical expertise in general thoracic, congenital heart and acquired diseases of the cardiovascular system
- Experience in basic science investigations including clinical review, clinical outcomes and basic research
