The Department of Urology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine welcomes fourth-year Wake Forest University medical students and fourth year Visiting MedicalStudents with an interest in urology to apply to rotate through our department.
We welcome medical students to spend four weeks with our program as urology sub interns. You will act as an integral member of our team and learn about urology in-depth. Our rotation offers hands-on training in both outpatient and inpatient urologic procedures, exposure to groundbreaking research at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), as well as our interdepartmental Wake Forest Clinical Urologic Research Enterprise (WF-CURE).
Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and enriching experience that will help you grow your career goals. During your rotation you will:
- Expand your knowledge in the urological field through a wide range of clinical cases and teaching opportunities.
- Enhance your clinical experience with urologic care involvement, including but not limited to outpatient clinics, inpatient services, emergency services, operating room, and procedure areas.
- Foster professional relationships and a sense of community within our urology team.
Instruction for the various components of this course will be given by autopsy technicians, the autopsy manager, the medicolegal death investigators, the rotating pathology residents, and the forensic pathologists.
Curriculum Overview
The cornerstone of our program is the extensive operative experience with our academic urology faculty, who are experts in each respective subspecialty. Your rotation in the Urology department will provide unique exposure to urologic subspecialties, including andrology/infertility, reconstructive urology/prosthetics, men's health, urologic oncology, minimally invasive surgery/robotics, endourology and complex stone disease, urogynecology/reconstructive pelvic surgery, and pediatric urology.
Clerkship curriculum includes:
- Participation in urology outpatient clinics including routine and urgent patient visits and procedures.
- Operating room experience across four different surgical sites.
- Learning opportunities in the surgical and medical management of acute and chronic urologic conditions for both adult and pediatric patients.
- Engagement in departmental education, including conferences, and grand rounds.
- Presentation at Grand Rounds, where each student presents a selected urologic topic at the end of the rotation.
- Mentorship and instruction from faculty members, advanced practice providers, fellows, and residents.
- Exposure to cutting-edge research through a visit to the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), observing ongoing research initiatives and projects with potential involvement in clinical research efforts through the Wake Forest Clinical Urologic Research Enterprise (WF-CURE). - Experiencing Life in Winston-Salem and gaining a sense of what it’s like to train and live in our community.
