Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Cancer Biology are pleased to announce the training program to promote diversity in cancer research for undergraduate students, a summer research program for underrepresented minority students.

Disparities in cancer incidence and mortality rates among different ethnic/racial groups has been well recognized; however, research in this area has lagged behind, partly due to a shortage of cancer researchers and physicians from underrepresented minorities. We have arranged a consortium of “Cancer Equity Research Training at North Carolina (CERT-NC)” by four universities, including the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University, North Carolina A&T State University, Winston-Salem State University and University North Carolina at Pembroke. The objective of this training program is to promote and enhance the diversity of the future cancer research workforce by providing undergraduates from under-represented populations with opportunities for short-term research experiences.

We are recruiting highly qualified underrepresented minority undergraduates through CERT-NC and nationwide and will provide participants with hands-on research activities in basic and translational laboratories, exposing them to cutting-edge cancer research. We also will provide mentorship and guidance to participants for their career development and will guide students in future career development. The training program consists of six critical components:

  1. Hands-on experiences in laboratory research under selected mentors
  2. Didactic lectures on basic and clinical aspects of cancer
  3. Attendance at seminars and a journal club with graduate students
  4. Clinical shadowing in cancer clinics
  5. Presentation of research at a cancer symposium at the end of the training period
  6. Subsequent guidance on selecting and applying for graduate school
