L. Ebony Boulware, MD, MPH, is dean of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and chief science officer and vice chief academic officer of Advocate Health.

In these roles, Dr. Boulware leads all aspects of the medical school, including programs to advance the clinical, research, education, innovation, and community engagement missions.

Dr. Boulware is a general internist with expertise in clinical epidemiology and a research portfolio dedicated to improving clinical care and advancing health for all populations. Her research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, and other organizations throughout her career. She has published more than 240 manuscripts, book chapters, and editorials and has mentored numerous students, residents, fellows, and faculty members. She is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Before joining Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Dr. Boulware served as vice dean for translational science and associate vice chancellor for translational research at Duke University, where she directed the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She was the Nanaline Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chief of the division of general internal medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine. Earlier in her career, she was on faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for more than a decade.

Dr. Boulware earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Vassar College and her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her residency and chief residency at the University of Maryland, followed by a research fellowship in general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also earned a master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
