The Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education is designed with the next generation of physician-leaders in mind. The building, a former R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. manufacturing plant, offers students an advanced environment in which to learn.

Students have access to the latest technologies and advancements which include:

Student Life

The Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education is designed to facilitate collaborative learning and professional development in relevant, real world contexts through simulation experiences, professional learning communities and integration of leading-edge medical education skills and techniques. Beginning with the White Coat Ceremony and ending with graduation, the Wake Forest University School of Medicine experience is a unique journey that produces individuals who are prepared, balanced and ready to provide exemplary patient care as they create the healthcare system of the future.

Student Resources Center

The Student Resource Center provides support in a cooperative effort from the Coy C. Carpenter Library and Information Technology Services. Here, library personnel are available to help students navigate an extensive collection of e-books, journals, clinical procedure videos, tutorials, diagnostic and point-of-care tools and scientific databases in the biomedical, clinical, and research sciences.

The Academic Computing Lab is located within the Resource Center and offers students across all educational programs the opportunity to interact with support staff. Students can speak directly to lab staff for assistance with IT troubleshooting, software installations, warranty repairs, obtaining loaner devices and general inquiries regarding mobile computing devices. The Academic Computing Lab staff also supports classroom and conference room preparations, lecture recordings, student testing and simulation events.

Houses Area

The Learning Communities/Student Houses are comprised of four distinct student areas: Red House, Yellow House, Green House and Blue House. Each House contains three study rooms and a large lounge area. The Houses also share a large common space where foosball and ping-pong tables, a multi-screen television and additional gathering spaces allow for fellowship and fun.

Deacon Gallery

The Deacon Gallery connects educational programs, research discoveries and clinical practices at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. The exhibit is a comprehensive look at Wake Forest University's Medical School and the legacy program of the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing as well as physician assistant, nurse anesthesia and graduate medical education programs.

The Deacon Gallery features several interactive stations including a scroll through yearbook and a mosaic that allows visitors to create and email custom collages. A directory is on hand for current medical school students and visitors to connect with alumni. The gallery space is also available for donor and alumni events.

Medical Grounds/Dining

Medical Grounds is a coffee/retail store located in Building 60 at Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. Here students can grab Starbucks coffee and iced drinks as well as grab-and-go items for a quick lunch or snack. Breakfast pastries and hot sandwiches are offered throughout the day. Retail goods including school of medicine logo items, over-the-counter medicines and charging devices are also available for purchase at Medical Grounds. The store is open 7:30 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

Sub Connection is available for made to order salads, sandwiches and wraps. Also serving soup daily. They also offer breakfast sandwiches and bagels.

Tiered Classroom

By incorporating student feedback in the design process, the tiered classroom/lecture hall has been equipped with multiple entrances and seating designed to promote collaborative team-based learning. A capture system allows for lectures to be recorded and interactivity with students. This fifth-floor academic space will be used for year 1 and year 2 MD courses, but can also be utilized for community lecture events.

Simulation Center

The Center for Experiential and Applied Learning (CEAL) is an innovative, state-of-the art learning environment which brings together a variety of resources at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the Innovation Quarter to create a center for shared learning among professionals.. CEAL’s 4th Floor location at BGCME includes exam rooms, a trauma/emergency medicine suite, an intensive care unit, and an operating room/procedure suite. These spaces are equipped with Learning Space technology, a comprehensive audiovisual system that integrates simulators and standardized patient programs. When not in use by educational programs, CEAL’s simulation suites also may be used for community health care training.
