Research activities involving recombinant DNA, infectious agents, and other potential hazardous biological materials are subject to oversight by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) as directed by the National Institutes of Health.
The IBC is tasked with reviewing research protocols to determine appropriate biosafety levels and ensure safe work practices are implemented to protect safety of personnel, our facilities, and the community.
Our local IBC covers all laboratory and clinical research occurring at the School of Medicine and Atrium Health facilities. Use of centralized IBCs for research oversight are generally not permitted but will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Committee Membership
Committee membership is comprised of subject matter experts representing multiple disciplines of biomedical research. Additionally, there are representatives from Health and Safety, IACUC, and the community.
