The purpose of the core is to offer equipment and services already being utilized for Geriatrics Research to other studies across the medical center and the Wake Forest University campus.
Core Equipment List
- DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry)
- A DEXA scan is a special x-ray that determines body composition, including bone mineral density, bone density content, lean tissue, and body fat. Can perform scans that include the: Whole Body, AP lumbar, Hip, Proximal Femur, Forearm, IVA, and Lateral Spine using a Hologic Horizon A scanner.
- Ultima™ CardiO2® gas exchange analysis system
- This system is for indirect calorimetry for measurement of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and maximal graded exercise testing with measurement of VO2.
- AMTI AccuSway Force and Motion Platform
- This system is for measuring postural sway and ground reaction forces.
- GAITrite Portable Mat
- This system is for temporospatial gait analysis. Applicable to a wide spectrum of disciplines. Can export footfall, gait cycle, walk and test level measurements.
Core Services Offered
- Recruitment of Research Participants
- The Aging Center has extensive experience with recruitment of older adults. We utilize all local media as well as our internal VITAL database that contains the names and addresses of over 20,000 people in our community that are interested in research.
- Transportation Services
- We have a staff of a full-time driver and a fleet consisting of one van and two crossover vehicles with which we can pick up research participants for their screening, clinic, or intervention visits. Additional services include, but are not limited to, transporting visiting dignitaries and timely delivery of specimen samples or equipment.
