About Me
I have the privilege of serving as Chair of a vibrant department of more than 500 faculty and house staff who are committed to creating a preeminent Learning Health System at Wake Forest Baptist Health. My own work has focused on implementing innovative healthcare delivery strategies and multi-institutional data networks to improve quality of care and support value-based purchasing strategies. It has been supported by grants from the NIH, VA, PCORI, AHRQ, HRSA, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Commonwealth Fund, Donald Reynolds Foundation, and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation.
I am passionate about nurturing the next generation of academic leaders and have mentored numerous junior faculty, residents, fellows, and graduate students. My mentees have received 18 career development awards from the NIH, VA, and other organizations. Prior to my recruitment to Wake Forest Baptist in 2016, I directed the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, Division of General Internal Medicine, and Center for Access and Delivery Research at the University of Iowa. On a national level, I have served as President of the Society of General Internal Medicine (2010-11) and Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine (2005-06) and on the Board of Directors of the Association for Clinical and Translational Science (2014-20).
