About Me

As director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest Baptist Health, I hold the Charles L Spurr Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and am chair of the Department of Cancer Biology.  I was the founder of the Cancer Genetics Program at Northwestern, was chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and deputy director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center.

My research has focused on cancer susceptibility and new therapies for cancer, and I have developed a new medical device for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, which received European regulatory approval in 2018. Additionally, I have published more than 120 articles, book chapters and editorials, many of which appeared in high-impact journals.

Since joining Wake Forest in March 2014, I have led a major expansion of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Cancer Biology, which has resulted in a near doubling of NCI funding between 2014 and 2018.
