The Cardiovascular Sciences Summer Research Program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain research experience during the summer months. The program includes research training in the cardiovascular sciences with mentoring by medical school faculty.

The Excellence in Cardiovascular Sciences (EICS) is sponsored by Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (R25HL092618).

Undergraduate students with an interest in a research-oriented career in the biomedical sciences are encouraged to apply. Program sponsorship includes compensation, housing in one of the Wake Forest University residence halls, and shuttle service while on campus. Participation requires a full-time, 40-hour work week (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) commitment for the two months of the summer program.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum includes hands-on research, a lecture and discussion series with presentations by faculty and guest speakers, and an end-of summer symposium during which students present their research findings. Trainees can partner with a member of the faculty in their desired field of research. Faculty serving as research mentors includes members of the Cardiovascular Sciences Center (CVSC), Hypertension & Vascular Research Center (HVRC), Center on Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism (CDOM), Center for Precision Medicine, and Maya Angelou Research Center for Healthy Communities (MARCH), and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Research may be focused across the translational spectrum and include Basic/Bench Science, Clinical-Epidemiological, and Population/ Community Health projects.
