Through this Human-centered design approach, the project engaged beneficiaries of the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist health plan – specifically women in the preconception stage (ages 18–39) – alongside healthcare providers, Human Resources professionals, and health plan representatives to understand factors influencing awareness and use of covered benefits. Stakeholder insights informed the iterative development, refinement, and pilot testing of implementation strategies within an employer-sponsored health plan setting to enhance awareness, understanding, and uptake of the exemplar intervention.

This work resulted in a practical field guide for employers and health plan administrators. This field guide provides a framework for applying Human-centered design to improve awareness, engagement, and utilization of covered benefits. The guide includes tools, lessons learned, and real-world examples from the CTSI Pilot Study to support adaptation across different interventions, populations, and organizational settings.
