Dr. Appt's research interests include using nonhuman primates to better understand factors affecting women’s health. Specifically, the NHP model is ideal for investigating the influence diet and reproductive hormones on risk factors for chronic diseases common in postmenopausal women. NHPs can also be studied to evaluate risk factors for reproductive dysfunction in younger women (i.e. the effect of obesity on reproductive function).

Research Project Highlights

  • Exploration of the NHP model for investigations of the effects of diet and reproductive hormones on cardiovascular disease.
  • Development of preclinical surgical models for a variety of disease interventions

Preclinical surgical models involving other species (swine, sheep) are also of interest.
