COVID-19 Notice: Due to Wake Forest Baptist Health guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the recommendations by the Coalition of Physician Accountability (COPA), visiting students that meet the COPA recommendations will be allowed to rotate in General Surgery. We are currently accepting applications through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO).


The Wake Forest Department of General Surgery would like to welcome 4th- year medical students to apply for a visiting Acting Internship in one of our general surgery rotations. Visiting students will have the same experience and expectations as home students, though it is up to the discretion of the visitor’s own institution if they will grant the student AI credit or not. We look forward to hearing from you.

Curriculum

Students will rotate through one of the available General Surgery Acting Internships at the main campus in Winston-Salem, NC.

The possible clerkships include:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Transplant
  • Colon and Rectal
  • Trauma
  • Minimally invasive/ Bariatric
  • Breast Surgery
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Emergency General Surgery
  • Burn Surgery

In general, students can expect a mix of exposure to the operating room, clinic, and inpatient wards.

As an integral part of our surgical team, visiting students will interact with residents and attendings throughout each day on service. Students are also invited and expected to attend weekly Grand Rounds and Quality and Performance Improvement conferences as well as their service-specific conferences. Acting internships also require a self-directed learning issue the details of which will be provided prior to the rotation start date.

The Wake Forest Department of Surgery is proud to sponsor the Dr. Harvey Allen Diversity Award intended to support underrepresented minority interest in surgical careers by funding an acting internship for a visiting 4th-year medical student.

How to Apply

Students interested in rotating at Wake Forest for a clerkship should apply through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and utilize the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program.
