The Section on Infectious Diseases (ID) in the Department of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine is comprised of professionals committed to excellence in patient care, research and education.
We are perhaps most proud of the collegial atmosphere created by our full-time faculty, affiliated faculty and dedicated staff. We have built a strong collection of clinician-scientists who have broad areas of interest, and are focused on both clinical breadth and collaborative, translational research with partners in other areas of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

This year, in the Section on Infectious Diseases, external research funding exceeded $2.5 million.
Our Research Highlights
The Section is currently conducting 20 clinical research trials in:
- HIV and other immuno-compromised patients
- Antimicrobial therapy
- Vaccines
Extramurally-funded basic and translational research activities focus on:
- Transmission of infection
- HIV
- Antimicrobial resistance
- Infections in the elderly
- Hepatitis B and C
- Viral bacterial interactions
Research Faculty
Our faculty members are perennial winners of teaching awards given by trainees throughout the Medical Center, and have been lauded for their clinical skills in multiple “best doctors” citations at the local and national level. Their research includes:
- HIV research
- Transmission dynamics of human pathogens
- Chronic hepatitis C infection diagnosis and management
- Immuno-compromised adults
