The Visiting Medical Student Program at Wake Forest University School of Medicine offers a valuable opportunity for both the institution and applicants, especially those interested in engaging with the dynamic healthcare landscape of Charlotte, North Carolina. This program supports collaboration across the school, the Atrium Health system, and visiting students. Priority is given to students currently enrolled at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

While visiting students are encouraged to apply, rotation placements are not guaranteed and are subject to change based on availability and institutional needs.

To be eligible for an elective rotation, applicants must be actively pursuing a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, be in good academic standing, have completed their third year of medical school, and have passed either the USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1. All applications must be submitted through the AAMC VSLO® platform, where additional requirements are outlined.

Please note that not all rotations are linked to residency programs. If you are seeking a residency opportunity—particularly within the Charlotte region’s growing medical community—be sure to inquire about program availability.

In addition to Charlotte-based experiences, students may also explore clinical learning opportunities in Winston-Salem, home to the School of Medicine’s main campus. Winston-Salem offers a rich academic environment and access to a wide range of specialties, making it an excellent complement to the urban clinical exposure available in Charlotte.
