The Joycelyn Johnson GME Scholarship is administered by the School of Medicine’s Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. This program is designed to promote diversity in the residency programs at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and annually offers scholarship assistance to visiting fourth-year medical students rotating in:

Diagnostic Radiology

Gynecologic Oncology

Interventional Radiology

Nuclear Medicine

Otolaryngology

Pathology

Pediatrics

Podiatry

Surgery

Urology

Dermatology

Emergency Medicine

Internal Medicine/Nephrology

Neurology

Orthopedic Surgery

Pain Medicine

Plastic Surgery

Psychiatry

Thoraic Surgery

Vascular Surgery

Application Requirements

Applicants must be fourth-year, U.S. medical school students in good standing at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) or the Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association. Applicants may be eligible to complete up to a one four-week elective with rotation periods typically starting in July. Students from groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Interested students must submit the visiting student application through Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) in addition to the scholarship application. The scholarship application is a separate application and will only be reviewed after you have been accepted for a visiting clerkship.

Program Specifics

  • Accepted students will receive a stipend to assist with housing and travel expenses.
  • The program will provide opportunities to meet faculty, residents, students and community health professionals.

Eligibility

Applicants who are underrepresented in medicine, economically disadvantaged or first-generation are encouraged to apply.
