Researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine are doing a study about the health and well-being of teenagers, called Project MARVEL. This unique study isn’t happening anywhere else in the country.
What is this study about?
The goal of the study is to better understand adolescents’ health and well-being, including how vaping impacts the development of teens’ brain, heart and lungs.
Who are we looking for?
We will invite high school students who are currently enrolled in one of the partnering schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School (WS/FCS) district to participate in a brief in-school survey.
What is required?
Initially, students will be invited to participate in a brief, 3-5 minute online School-Based Survey during the school day. The survey assesses students’ health, well-being and demographics on a secure website. Parents can see a copy of the survey in the main office of each partnering school or access an online version at anytime.
Students might be eligible for additional studies within Project MARVEL.
If a student completes the School-Based Survey, do they have to complete additional portions of the study?
No, all portions of this study are optional for those who qualify. A student can complete just the School-Based Survey.
How to participate?
Before students are invited to participate in the School-Based Survey, parents/guardians will receive information from their child’s school that describes the study. A parent/guardian must complete an online permission form for students under the age of 18.
Is the survey confidential?
Protecting participant data and keeping survey answers private is our most important job. When students take the survey, their record will be saved under a unique ID number that only the research team can see. Their survey responses will be kept on a secure and password-protected server at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Only members of the Project MARVEL research team will be able to see their answers. No one else will have access to students’ survey answers - not parents or guardians and not anyone from the school, including principals, teachers or coaches. Students can answer honestly and not worry about anyone finding out what they said.
